Memorial Day- Forbidden to Forget

We are forbidden to forget

A mother cried for many years,
making big crowns from her tears,
an unmarked grave was her altar,
where she has read hours from the psalter,
close to her heart, she kept the flag; red, white, and blue,
until she, later, went to you.

A beautiful young girl, just engaged,
had her white wings locked in a cage,
she blamed the world and God, the death,
for stealing her love and your sweet breath.

Two brothers miss you every day,
while they still played, you went away,
you promised you'll be back, and very soon,
decades they waited, June after June.

A father went to the grave too early,
so proud of you and your brave journey,
but still, the pain was cutting deep,
and one late night, he went to "sleep."

Today, we honor you, your sacrifice,
but our tribute will not suffice,
eternally, we are in debt,
we are forbidden to forget.
